- Spend time assessing whether the grant is a good fit before expending the resources in writing the application.
- Reach out to the funder before applying. Have a conversation, get feedback.
- Consider whether the grant will make your organization 'poorer' if you succeed in securing the grant.
Do NOT apply for these grants:
- Does not serve your mission; requires your organization to contort or 'spin' itself, in order to be a fit.
- Does not provide enough funds for overhead.
- Too much reporting required, relative to the amount of the grant.
- Requires an in-kind contribution that your organization doesn't have or can't secure.
